Brunei Travel Guide

Brunei is one of the least visited countries in the world. Brunei Darussalam on Borneo Island offers rainforests and some of Asia’s most beautiful mosques. Read more to find out some of the adventurous places to visit in Brunei.
Ulu Temburong National Park (Day Trip – Reservation Required)

An ecological gem in the heart of the fast vanishing Borneo rainforest, Brunei’s only National Park beckons, reachable only by braving rocky rapids in a longboat.

The fun begins with a 45-minute speedboat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar, zipping through meandering rivers lined with mangroves and nipah palms. From Bangar, it is a short drive and a stroll into Eco Village, tucked away in a corner of Sumbiling Lama, an Iban Village, and fronting an upstream stretch of the Temburong River.

Settle in and enjoy light refreshments, before being briefed by the guide, and proceeding to board a temuai, a flat-based local long boat.

Prepare for the ride of your life, as the boatman skill-fully weaves his way across gushing rocky rapids, straight for the National Park. During low water, to get the boat moving, you might even have to come out of the longboat to push it along or walk along dry rocky riverbeds!

Upon arrival, it is the start of a 385m ascending trek past virgin rainforest with its majestic hardwood trees, naturally adapted to growth on uneven ground.

The ascent takes you up the ridge to the base of the Canopy Walkway – a climb up presents the different strata of the rainforest below and above the shady canopies, topped with a breathtaking vista of the surrounding greenery.

On the way back, head for a waterfall for a cool dip. The waterfall is known for its “fresh fish spa”, where little fish nibble away the dead skin from your feet.

After returning, freshen up and get down to a heart lunch prepared by local villagers.

Depart for Bangar, returning to Bandar Seri Begawan by speedboat with fond memories of a beautiful day.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

The place is really fascinating. So clean and calm! The architecture design is stunning. It’s built next to the river and has a tranquil feel about it.

Jalan McArthur, Bandar Seri Begawan BS8711, Brunei

Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
One of the most beautiful mosque I’ve visited. The mosque is surrounded by a beautiful garden and fountains, giving a calming aura.

Simpang 127, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei
Kampung Ayer
All of the Water Village buildings are constructed on stilts above the Brunei River and have been in Brunei since 1521. Don’t forget to take a river cruise along Brunei River.

The floating village stretches across the Brunei River in Bandar Seri Begawan, housing approximately 13,000 residents.

Soto Pabo
Quite a decent place to eat as the view of the village is spectacular. While dining here, you get to see beautiful Kampung Ayer scenery along with RIPAS Bridge. The sunset here is amazing too. Decent Soto with amazing banana fritters.

Spg. 222 Kg. Pintu Malim, Jalan Sultan Bolkiah, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei
Nasi Katok Mama
Why is it named Nasi Katok. The story is that people would knock on the door to order the rice from the seller – hence the name is called Nasi Katok. What’s special about this dish is that they actually serve honey grilled chicken instead of fried chicken. Their sandal does pack a punch too.

Jalan Cator, Pusan Bandar Seri Begawan, Daerah Brunei-Muara, BS8811, Brunei Darussalam

The Currypuff Factory
Well, it’s definitely not your average curry puff. The puff pastry is crispy and buttery. Indeed delicious!

No. 12, Simpang 150, Bangunan HABZA, Bandar Seri Begawan BE1518, Brunei

Aminah Arif Restaurant
This restaurant is famous for their Ambuyat.
Ambuyat is a dish derived from the interior trunk of the sago palm and has a similar texture to tapioca starch. Often Ambuyat is served with a wide selection of sauces and I would suggest to go for their homemade chili sauce. To eat this exotic cuisine you roll the Ambuyat around a two pronged bamboo stick  called a chandas, dip in the sauce and swallow.

Unit 2-3, Block B, Bangunan Hj Abd Rahman, Spg 88, Kiulap, Bandar Seri Begawan Brunei Darussalam

Love the salted egg yolk chicken rice. There are tiny little pieces of salted egg yolk in the salted egg yolk sauce.

Bamboo Garden’s signature has always been its chicken rice. Pandas Nasi lemak topped with amazingly juicy fried chicken. Delicious Ikan Tenggiri In asam curry broth.

Phongmun Restaurant Sdn Bhd
Phongmun is one of the few remaining places in Brunei where you can get authentic Chinese food and ambience. I personally love the fried salad prawn!
